The H-Team: Meet Brecht

Meet Brecht Huysentruyt, head of our construction department and a man with a passion for sports, building, and teamwork. Since 2019, he has been enthusiastically dedicating himself to Hectaar every day, both on-site and behind the scenes. Curious about his story and what drives him? You can read it here.

Would you like to introduce yourself?

I am Brecht Huysentruyt, 36 years old and living in the lively Kooigem, the Provence of Kortrijk. Together with my wife Joke, I am the proud father of two energetic little ones, Louise and Achiel. I graduated as a civil engineer specializing in construction in the beautiful city of Ghent, and that construction story runs like a thread through my life. I love being active and keeping my condition sharp in the pool, on the bike, or while running. Currently, I'm in full training for a new challenge – the upcoming quarter triathlon in Kortrijk. Of course, I'll be doing this in Hectaar attire, so the bar is set high. Most of my sports career was spent on the basketball court. For years, it was my outlet and passion. Today, you can mostly find me on the sidelines as a loyal supporter or helping hand at the friendliest club in the country, BC Vagant Kortrijk. A cozy club that I helped establish in 2014 with nine basketball friends.

What is your role at Hectaar and how long have you been active?

My adventure at Hectaar started in February 2019 as a project leader. From the beginning, I received a lot of freedom and trust to successfully complete projects. Two years later, I had the opportunity to advance to head of the construction department, a challenge I seized with both hands. Every day is different. From monitoring deadlines to supporting colleagues on-site, from strategic adjustments to contributing ideas about the digitization of our operations. Together with a fantastic team, I work on the continuous improvement of our construction processes. This is no easy task, especially in a context of rapid growth, changing regulations, and geographical expansion. But it's precisely this complexity that makes it fascinating.

How did you end up at Hectaar?

After a few years in the family business BV Benedict Huysentruyt Paint & Advice in Heule, I felt the itch to return to the construction world. On an ordinary Sunday, I clicked through to the Hectaar website, where I found a vacancy that appealed to me. Monday followed a welcoming conversation with Jan and Mathias, and we immediately clicked. By Wednesday, everything was finalized. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut feeling. If it feels right, it is right.

What achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am especially proud of my team, who dedicate themselves every day to realizing our homes and apartments. It is always a complex puzzle, but we piece it together. The strength lies in our teamwork, and I am genuinely grateful to them for that.

How does Hectaar work towards a positive team culture?

Each year, two team-building events are organized – one for the summer break and one for the Christmas break. In between, there is also time for other activities, including a barbecue, Saint Nicholas snack, monthly spinning sessions, joint site visits, and company visits. In our new office, there's also a space to chat after work with a refreshing pint at the bar. That way, you get to know colleagues in a different way.

What advice would you give to new colleagues?

Everyone at Hectaar is an indispensable link in the whole. The role divisions are not always black and white, but that’s precisely the strength of our team. We jump in where needed and help each other move forward. By communicating openly, supporting one another, and continuously learning, we grow as a team and as an organization. So: dare to ask questions, stay curious, and think about how it can be even better.

What are you most looking forward to in your future at Hectaar?

I am particularly looking forward to further digitization within Hectaar. It should ensure smoother communication, both internally and externally, fewer mistakes, and even more efficient project follow-up. All with one goal: working smarter and faster. With the right tools and support, we can continue to grow and build the future of Hectaar.

What is your favorite Hectaar project from the current offering?

Without a doubt 'The Gendarmerie' in Bruges. A beautiful project where old and new blend harmoniously: the renovation of a former police station combined with a new construction section. It is technically challenging and requires tight planning, but that's precisely what makes it so interesting.

What is your Hectaar Highlight?

The move to our new office in the Armoedestraat. A beautiful building with a contemporary, playful vibe and an interior that’s impressive. Everything is provided, from the right facilities to the necessary flexibility. It’s the perfect place to start the workday with enthusiasm every day.
