New housing project: future-oriented living in 'Uustakker'

Where a neglected site once lay, a lively, green residential neighborhood will soon emerge. Today we are starting the sale of 28 sustainable new homes along Bredestraat in Oostakker. This project is much more than a classic residential development. We are creating a place where people can live peacefully, meet each other, and be surrounded by greenery.
A New Life for a Forgotten Part of Oostakker
The homes are grouped around a car-free inner area, emphasizing collectivity, spatial quality, and interaction. The residential area consists of 28 homes—a mix of semi-detached and terraced houses—all with private gardens and flat roofs. Six homes will have a third floor with a roof terrace, providing additional living space and outdoor areas.
Despite the variation, the homes are coordinated in design, rhythm, and material use, forming a coherent architectural whole. We consciously choose timeless architecture that harmonizes with the surroundings. And, of course, we fully focus on energy efficiency: each home will have an air-water heat pump.
Peaceful, car-free, and ready for the future
The new neighborhood is designed to be completely car-free. Residents will park their cars in a central parking area, keeping the inner area safe and livable. We make it pleasant and safe for cyclists and pedestrians. There's a spacious collective bicycle storage and, for some homes, even an additional private storage. The parking spaces are prepared for electric charging points, so residents are ready for the future.
Space for Green and Interaction
The residential area will have a pronounced green character: existing trees will be preserved and complemented with new plantings. Additionally, a large park and green zone will be transferred to the public domain, allowing the neighborhood to enjoy the greenery. For residents of lots 9 to 14, there is also a shared private garden area. New underground waste containers will be placed along Bredestraat, ensuring a neat and tidy street appearance. In the heart of the residential area, we provide space for a collective community garden. Here, residents can get to know each other, garden together, and literally reap the benefits of their cooperation.
A Street Name with History
The new street name, Pierre De Vaerestraat, refers to Pierre De Vaere (1879–1949), notary and mayor of Oostakker from 1933 to 1940. The city chose this name because the courtyards between Gentstraat and the village square once belonged to a manor that was demolished with the construction of Sint-Laurentiuslaan, where De Vaere lived. With this project, we aim not only to build homes but to create a warm, sustainable living environment. A place where you can live comfortably and with quality, within cycling distance of the center of Ghent, with ample outdoor space, peace, greenery, and a strong connection to the surroundings.
The demolition work has now been completed, and road construction will start soon. The construction of the homes is planned for the spring of 2026.
